South Mountain ParkSouth Mountain Park & Ongoing Safety ImprovementsFollowing Rob’s passing at South Mountain Park in 2017, the Rob Dollar Foundation has worked closely with park officials to expand and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. One of our earliest wins was the expansion of Silent Sunday, which began as a once-a-month road closure and has since grown to every Sunday from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., in addition to a full closure on the fourth Sunday of each month. This gives thousands of cyclists, runners, and families a safe, car-free way to enjoy the park each week.
In 2022, the park introduced a newly paved road with a dedicated bike lane, a direct result of years of advocacy and collaboration. The City of Phoenix has since made further safety upgrades, including new guardrails and continued road improvements planned through 2026 and beyond. Looking ahead, additional enhancements are on the horizon. “Share the Road” signs—now officially MUTCD approved—will be added as part of the park’s next round of upgrades, and future projects include identifying safe pullover areas for cyclists. We are also proud to partner with the South Mountain Park Education Center each October for Bike Safety Month, an annual program with events and activities focused on education for riders of all ages and experience levels. |
